(Southwold Model Yacht Regattas)

Starting at 2pm Final Regatta

Model yacht sailing can be traced back, unbroken, to the late nineteenth century, though the Southwold Model Yacht Regatta Committee seems to have been established in 1905.

The regattas are held near the pier alongside Southwold Marshes.

The regattas have always been organised by volunteers, most of whom have sailed since childhood days and are glad of the opportunity to give something back to the sport from which they have derived such pleasure.

Standard races are across the pond and back, with the start based on a handicap according to the size of the boat.

In addition to the regular races, there is also competition for many particular cups.

For those who have not sailed before, there are a limited number of club boat which may be borrowed and regular sailors are always pleased to help newcomers, especially children

(Happisburgh Lighthouse, Norfolk, NR12 0PY)

10:30am-4pm Open Day

Happisburgh Lighthouse is the oldest working light in East Anglia, and the only independently run lighthouse in Great Britain.

Built in 1790, orginally one of a pair - the tower is 85ft tall and the lantern is 134ft above sea level.

The 'low light' which was discontinued in 1883 was 20ft lower and the pair formed leading lights marking safe passage around the southern end of the treacherous Haisborough Sands.

Today the lighthouse is painted white with three red bands, and has a light charcteristic of 3 white flashes, repeated every 30secs with a range of 18 miles.

Saved as a working light by the local community, it is maintained and operated entirely by voluntary contributions.

The lighthouse is open to the public on occasional Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout the summer.

Adults £3; Children (16 and under) £1

We regret that children under 1 metre in height are not able to climb the 112 steps to the lantern.
