2.30pm and 7.30pm      Suffolk Libraries Presents: A Woman of No Importance

Set in the nineteenth century, Oscar Wilde's 'A Woman of No Importance' follows a group of guests at a party at Lady Hunstanton's estate in the lavish English countryside.

The party's guests, which include the widow Mrs Abuthnot, her son Gerald and American outsider Hester, uncover truths about themselves and each other that will alter their lives forever.

Wilde's story explores class, family and double standards towards women as the guests grapple with unexpected visiors, their selfish actions and intentions.

The play tackles the themes of money, which, as aristocrats, they consider an unlimited reource, and the innocence of the play's younger characters.

From the 2017 production at The Vaudevile Theatre in London's West End starring Eleanor Bron, Anne Reid, Eve Best & William Gaunt

Tickets £10 (£8 or 12s and under) available from Southwold Library, Southwold Arts Centre and via www.ticketsource.co.uk/suffolklibraries

7.30pm       Two Gents Productions Present: Earnest by Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde. Two actors. What could possibly go wrong?

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is Oscar Wilde’s classic, witty and laugh out loud comedy of mistaken identities, confusion and cucumber sandwiches. On the surface it’s a light, fluffy jibe at the nonsensicalness of the rich and upper class. At a deeper level, it is also a profound plea for sincerity & caring in the face of adversity.

Imagining a thoroughly diverse and integrated English society, 2 British-African women play all characters and bring to life this 19th century comedy of manners in an at once mocking and lovingly playful tone. Embracing wild wit, deft humour, role swapping and banter with the audience, they unfurl a riot of love, confusion and high jinks.

A perfect show for anyone ready for a good night out, looking for a bit of comedy & entertainment, hankering for a fresh take on a classic play or simply a fan of good theatre. This includes adults of all ages, young adults and children from the age of 11 and above.  Performed by Ayesha Casely-Hayford and Kudzanayi Chiwawa directed by Tonderai Munyevu and Arne Pohlmeier

This performance is “Pay What You Decide” book your tickets beforehand but part with NO money until after you have seen the show.

Book your tickets at Southwold Library & Southwold Arts Centre and online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/suffolklibraries

11am - 4pm    A Bumper Family History Open Day will be held  at the Long Shop Museum, Leiston

A variety of exhibits will be on show, including local graveyard surveys, war memorials, directories, parish registers, census returns, old maps of the area – and Peter Drew’s extensive collection of historical newspaper cuttings and postcards featuring the Sizewell, Aldringham and Friston areas.

A special feature of our Open Day this year will be the results of our project to preserve the Leiston Grammar School sports team photographs, of which there are over 80, from the period 1933 to 1968.  The digitised photos, catalogue, etc will be available to view at the Open Day, and at our Help Centre at the Old Council Offices in Leiston, and copies will be provided to any interested alumni or members of their families. The original photographs have now been deposited with the Suffolk Record Office.

And back by popular demand – Have you got any old family photos which you can't put a date to?  Bring them along and let our expert advise you.

Are you trying to trace your military ancestors?  or your family tree? Advice and help will be available from experienced researchers. And we’ll have our computers with (hopefully) Internet to help with your research.

Free entrance, but donations to the Long Shop appreciated. Light refreshments.

2.30pm and 7.30pm      Suffolk Libraries Presents: An Ideal Husband

The Rolls-Royce of English comedies, Oscar Wilde's 'An Ideal Husband' brings an act of political sin into the heart of the English home, playing as part of Classic Spring's year-long celebration of Wilde.

In 'An Ideal Husand', an ambitious government minister, Sir Robert Chiltern, is on an assured smooth ascent to the top.  Until Mrs Chevely appears in London with damning proof of his previous financial chicanery, that is.

An Ideal Husband is Wilde's sharp and witty exploration of the corruption, blackmail and honour that ensues when political sin enters the heart of the English home.

Tickets £10 (£8 or 12s and under) available from Southwold Library, Southwold Arts Centre and via www.ticketsource.co.uk/suffolklibraries
